can someone explain to me the benefit of having a frag tank piped into your reef system? i see a lot of people doing this and am curious as to why?

i have room for a ton of tanks in my fish closet so im exploring my options....

i think if i piped in another tank it'd be a RDSB as my current refugium is 5.6gal and has 3" of mud and chaeto. i could use another deep sand bed with various sizes of sand to plant more mangroves and chaeto and increase overall volume of water while creating a nice bacterial haven of sand.

i might have a fourth tank on its way to my home. (ive been scavenging craigslist/ebay/classifieds lately of cheap deals) hence why im exploring my options of what to do with stuff when things start arriving ;)

I think that your confused about what a frag tank(FT) is. Most people who have FT are trimming their corals and selling it. A way to help pay for the hobby. Some FT are plumbed into their exisiting systems and some are independent. Any kind of refugium plumbed into your exisiting system is a great addition and benefit.

once you start losing frags you just made behind your rockwork in the DT you will know why a frag tank is a really nice thing to have available.

It's just convenient and allows you to have more space in you DT. It's not necessary by any means, but they are pretty easy to setup and many people have small tanks laying around.
