One reason is more contact time between water and macro's that remove the excess nutrients.

It allows the macro to remove more nitrate and phosphate.

Many people say you need a slow flow, but I've never really worried about it my refugium and tank have done just fine. My refugium is in between my drain and return, so whatever gph is going through the sump is going through the refugium. I use a Rio 2100 for a return so my return flow is about 400-500 gph.

Also, the pods don’t like to have to hold on for dear life :)

Could also be to allow the sand to denitrify.

+1 the high flow probably shouldn't negatively effect the rate nutrients are taken in by plants but you don't want all the pods to get sucked out of the fuge too fast.

All seem like very resonable answers.
    Thanks,
