Well, this particular "expert" is wrong so often it's not funny beyond his normal scope of creepy-crawlies. I know people with very little knowledge who can run a reef tank longer than him. I personally would be VERY wary of making any major changes to your system based on anything he wrote.
    • He claims that worms are responsible for moving water in and out of LR and coralline algae covers the pores, thereby making LR not useful....WRONG Nutrient laden water get's into LR by a number of factors....viscous entrainment, bernoulli principle, simple diffusion, etc. The thalli of coralline algae is like a lattice and it's big enough to allow water in as well as bacteria.
    • For someone with a doctorate in the sciences, one would think he would have a full understanding of Trophic energy and the Second Law of Thermodynamics. But then one would be wrong For years he has demonstrated his lack of understanding of both of these fundamental scientific principles even though they've been explained to him hundreds of times.
    • This person doesn't even understand Nitrification, Denitrification, Ammonification, etc and is still spouting information that science proved was wrong LOOOOOONG ago. However, new hobbiests don't know that he's wrong and when someone tries to correct the information out there, some reef hobbiests get in a huff and attack the person who's really trying to help which causes the thread to get closed.
    • This person still doesn't understand that pure chemical reactions are impeded by bacterial biofilms even though it's been explained to him 100's of times. You are not going to be getting a huge buffering of Calcium and alkalinity due to your sandbed dissolving. Eric Borneman just did a study on it and found that this old wives tale was indeed wrong as many of us have been saying for years including Craig Bingman, Randy Holmes-Farly, Boomer, and myself (probably Tangster too). Here's the funny thing....Eric only mentions that Jaubert was wrong. He said nothing about this person in the article who is still posting this misinformation as truth and still selling books stating the opposite to the detriment of newer hobbiests.
    • Does anyone remember his salt study that made hundreds and hundreds of people completely nuke their tanks by doing large waterchanges with a non-chelated salt. There's nothing at all wrong with the salt. However, you shouldn't do this. I'm a CPA and I knew not to do that. He's a scientist and he should have known to warn people not to do that. Yet he didn't know and he didn't warn anyone. I can't imagine how many hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of animals died as a result of his ignorance and lack of willingness to learn.
    • Does anyone remember when he banned Charles Delbeek and Richard Harker for proving him wrong regarding temperature and specific gravity??? I certainly do.
    • I'm not even going to get into the sandbed issue. Lets just say that for years, whenever someone had problem phosphates or cyanobacteria on their sandbed, it was because they did something wrong...they didn't follow his advice properly. Now he'll admit that when you have problem cyano and it doesn't go away on it's own after adding phosphate removers, flow, lessing the food import, etc., his magic sandbed should be pulled and replaced entirely.

Oh, I could go on and on but it's not necessary. I think I've made my point. Don't make major changes to your system based on anything he says.

I highly respect this person for his knowledge of creepy-crawlies. However, I lose all respect for him when he spouts off about topics he doesn't understand at all. It's a shame that his title makes his idiotic twattle (that's a joke for Charles and Richard) believable on other issues he clearly doesn't understand and doesn't want to understand.

I second every thing you said In-wall I always wind up as to vulgar for public print when I speak of him :) Guy is a idiot and I'll leave it at that and I'll tell anyone who want to follow him to go ahead , Just remember education cost and you have to decide how much you want to spend..
All I'd ask anyone what is the purpose to walk that razoeblade ? What will it do for your system ? I have never been given a good answer as to why the Dr's DSB was needed and what its intent was for other then its a dangerous way to get rid of nitrates .. They failed in the 50's 60's 70's went away in the 80's and back in the 90's LOL To all who'd run a system like this I say run on off and tell me how it ends in a yrs or so..

All I can say is AMEN!

We need to write a book, combine our money and publish it ourself. My mom writes geneology books and uses staples to print them, bind them. They do all the publishing work. We just pay for it, lol.

    +karma to both of you!
