I hear what You are all saying.
I would like to point out that your voice can be heard the loudest by NOT making a purchase. That is how I protest, take the money somewhere else. The bean counters will get the message real quick if enough people do it.
The other thing is that people seem to want to blame everything on the Company. Just remember that behind every decision there lies a face. Someone has to make a decision and make it company policy. As far as I know they don't have computers making the decisions yet :)

Call their main headquarters and tell them about what you saw and how you feel.... It might not fix everyhting but if they get enough complaints they might act.

I have to agree with those who said that the best way to "hurt" places like Petco and Pet Smart is to not shop there at all. Petitions, complaints, contacting PETA, etc., has been tried by many many others all to no avail. Unfortunately, people will continue to shop there for their pet supplies because they're relatively cheap.

I know this is really long but I found it really interesting reading.
It is part of the employee "CODE OF ETHICS" from PETCO's web site.
I especially find the last line real interesting! I wonder do they ever
    refer themselves?

ANIMALS ALWAYS COME FIRST, OUR PEOPLE MAKE IT HAPPEN At PETCO,

we believe it is better to hire animal lovers and train them to
work in a retail environment than to hire retailers and hope
they like animals. This belief stems from PETCO’s commitment to
making sure that Animals Always Come First and recognizes that
Our People Make It Happen! Whether you’re caring for animals,
educating prospective pet parents, or promoting PETCO’s Think
Adoption First philosophy, your everyday decisions make all the
difference in achieving PETCO’s high ethical standards regarding
animal care. The following paragraphs summarize the fundamental
philosophies PETCO has adopted regarding animal care that all
associates are expected to understand, support, and uphold.
    Animal Care

As PETCO associates, it is our responsibility to promote the health,
well being and humane treatment of animals. We must do the right
thing as a Company and as individuals to ensure animal well-being
without jeopardizing human safety. We must consistently deliver
safe, skillful, and compassionate care to all animals entrusted to us.
While animals are in our care, associates constantly monitor their
health and well-being; beginning with regular checks during
business hours conducted according to guidelines created by
experts. These checks are supplemented by further reviews and
audits by regional and NSC personnel.

Each time you walk down the aisles of a PETCO store, whether you
are on duty or shopping for your pet, take a moment to verify that
all animals are properly fed, watered, and housed. If you believe
the care of an animal may be in question, it is your responsibility to
take the initiative to address your concern and make sure that
appropriate action is immediately taken to resolve the concern.
PETCO associates must share and support PETCO’s animal care
objectives and demonstrate genuine respect and concern for
animals and their proper care. Any associate who engages in
behavior constituting neglect, mistreatment, cruelty, or abuse of any
animal will be subject to immediate discipline, up to and including
separation from employment. This includes neglect, mistreatment,
cruelty, or abuse of any animal on or off PETCO’s premises,
including animals offered for adoption and sale; those visiting
PETCO for grooming, photographs, veterinary care, and obedience
training; and those that are on Company premises for any other
reason. Where appropriate, PETCO may refer such matters for
    criminal prosecution.

It is really hard not to shop at PetCo as for some people other than ordering on line its the only place to get supplies. They also do seem to do some good with their pet adoptions/etc when it comes to cats and dogs and in raising money for things like that but when it comes to birds and fish or small "disposable" animals they really seem to drop the ball. Getting rid of PetCo may not be the key but a definate rethinking in their organization would really help. Also everything on one system scares me. One tank goes bad it infects the whole system and alot of times the employees are helpless and other times they are lazy. There is no easy solution because money becomes involved.
Unfortunately people are treated sub-par across the world all over saving a buck a lot of times so it goes without saying its going to happen to our animals.

ok i hate the place but i am man enough to see good things when i see them.i'm talking about their pet adoption program.pet adoption programs like theirs are much needed.i was so happy when petco took my guinee pig off my hands.i took it there cause it was such a nice lil pet but i never wanted it and don't have any interest in it .i bought it to replace one that died of old age for my daughter.well it did'nt work.she never took to it after loosing shadow so i was thrilled that petco took it back and gave it a chance to have an owner that cared more for it.they take very good care of the guinee pigs.my gripe was over the fish.
