Picked this guy up the other day and it has since turned an even more intense shade of orange than I've ever seen in a chalice before. I tried looking around online and found a similar "Orange Indo" chalice selling for around $300. Anybody have any thoughts on if this is one of those "named" chalices or just a run of the mill orange one?

I'm not even a chalice person but I love that. Better send it to me so I can further study it. LOL

No idea in an ID here's a bump for you.

I kinda think it looks like a scolymia. But very cool looking either way.

It can't be a named chalice unless you bought it from a source selling said named chalice.

That aside, it's a nice chalice.

Believe me, I know how the wholesale side of things works, and I know what you're implying.

But that still doesn't change my answer however. While it might be the same thing, it's not the same thing.

Ultimately, what's in a name and what's it worth to you?

no argument here from me on this, but,

Are you sort of implying that some may soon be patenting certain genetic strains?
Like, I have what I was told by a reefer that it is a Tyree Monti flower.
Can I sell/trade/give frags and call it that? Or is it copyrighted, and tchnically I should have to pay royalties?

And if so, I usually call it my blue polyped brown Monti Cap anyways!

    ;-)

What hes saying is that there are alot of similar/identical coral around the world. Back in the day certain people began collecting corals and propagating them for generations in the home aquaria, these coral got names and were know to hold color and be more hardy than other wild caught or maricultured corals.

Now days people generally associate names with coloration and growth patterns, but without the lineage you may not have a resilient most suitable frag for your system. Red planets from ORA are a green and red tabling acro, but other red/green tables will be far more prone to melting for very little reason, so having a true RP is preferable.

I prefer named corals with a lineage. A part of my thinking is for re sale value. Not that I'm trying to make money but just selling occasional frags to offset some operating cost/beer/poker money. Not necessarily in that order. If it really wows me than of course.. who cares if it has a name.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
And there is nothing wrong with that. It's just a different interest related to the hobby. Those aquaculturing corals have greatly influenced the availability of corals, it's a win win.
Personally I got into this hobby for the science. To keep marine fish and coral in a box of water fascinates me. Nothing could be farther from my mind than thinking about re sale value. I have never bought a coral with that mind set and I have never sold a coral for profit.

Edit: Yeah I have no idea of the ID. Way to stay on topic Cheryl. :p
