It's not really necessary to use rodi on a fowlr. It would help, though. Make sure to use prime with water changes, and limit the light cycle. So what if a little algae grows in a fish tank. Personally, I turn the lights off for a week or so and it allow dies off. Can't do that with a reef tank.

well if it was the only thread i'd agree, but he already knows he's doing wrong with the tap water and theres a history. so nah, sorry, don't feel bad. Trying to save him TONS of cash by not being nice. He's gonna kill a ton of stuff at that rate

    You are at great risk.

30% water change will work with certain premium salt formulas that do not produce stress. They will precipitate various toxins out of the water column. No matter what your large in number fish population will prevent many corals from growing and kill some of them.

Moving forward you must use an ultra premium salt mix and purchase ro water from your lfs. Stay away from the LFS mixed saltwater. It is usually Bull$hit.

Actually you can do that treatment with a reef.

Why would you have to use an "ultra premium salt mix"? And what constitutes this kind of salt? I use IO with no problems.

I ran my first fowlr on tap didnt know any better then. I think you will be fine just use the prime. IMO of this hobby the more possible preventitives the better... when u can. But I understand moving around that much rodi water and storing it sucks. I assume you have a decent amount of evap on a tank that size. Lets see some pictures!

    Eperience pays.

Look at your number of posts, then look at the number of posts of the individual who started this thread. Let me know if this doesn't lead to the answer your looking for.:joker:

you must have added some sort of bacteria if your fish are still alive after one only week cycle, in saltwater 6 weeks is the bare minimum for a natural cycle. now regarding your RO/DI system i dont have the option to hook it at perm either (though it would make my life simpler) so i just attach it when i need to!!! that is once every 2 weeks, i can deal with the PITA once a week.

it would help if you were able to get the specs of your tap water, that way we could have a detailed idea of what is going in your water. if it seems to be working so far you then might be on the lucky end of the rope though i fear long term damage. algae will become and issue as most tap waters contain phosphate.

    goodluck

The post count of a user doesn't have anything to do with experience level (maybe in this case), so there's no need to make assumptions. Regardless, an "ultra premium" (example please?), or a more expansive brand of salt will not necessarily result in a better tank, nor will it solve possible algae problems.
