hey guys, I want to upgrade my lighting slowly so i can keep better corals. At the moment i have 3 T8 tubes, (one not working) so im limited to mushrooms etc.
Anyways, what i want to do is buy this:

Metal Halide Lights and Accessories - Metal Halide Light Fittings - METAL HALIDE CLAMP ON LAMP CHFL-150 FOR MARINE AQUARIUM - Guppy’s Aquarium Products Online - METAL HALIDE CLAMP ON LAMP CH-150 FOR MARINE AQUARIUM

I have a 55Gal tank, the dimensions are: water depth 18" approx, 38" width and 17" appox from front to back.
So i was thinking of buying the above MH unit and just lighting half of the tank initially... so i would put the lamp slightly to the left or right of the tank. Under the light i will put corals and have less/no corals further away from the light. Im thinking this wont make too much of a heat issue. Correct?
Will this work for a while? Can u see any obvious problems?:)
Why am i doing this? well... money mainly. I figure if i can light half of the tank and grow corals under that half than obviously all expenses are halved and i still have a medium tank with medium water volume. I think it might look kind of cool too... i dunno, maybe not! ;D The other option would be to set up a nano which im also considering but at the moment liking this idea more and way cheaper (?) and scalable.

Down the track i can get a second unit and light the other half of the tank. I think than i can also time the lights so say the one on the left goes on before the one on the right and switches off earlier... so its kind of like the sunrise and sunset. Do you think timing the lights like this has any benefit what so ever? i just figured i would try and replicate nature a bit more. I wont buy the second unit for a few months though.

Anyone please feel free to kick in your opinion. Has anyone tried this? Thanks :):):)

since no one else will answer, I'll give it a shot.

Hope this helps and sorry I couldn't give more specifics about that fixture.

Thanks cuttingras mate :) i appreciate your thoughts :)

I ordered the MH and it should arrive in a couple days hopefully. Im a bit excited. I never knew i could get so excited over a light fixture (the reef geek in me is growing stronger!).
Ive decided that im going to set it the MH over a nano for now. So i'll keep the 55gal as a FOWLR and start a 10gal. Next i'll be asking questions about how to link the nano to the 55gal...

Hey if i ask enough questions... do i eventually get a degree in marine biology?

NP hope it helped. If it were me, I would keep the 55 a fowlr and defnintly make the 10 a reef. It would be cheaper in the long run. I'm sure though, I would not hook them together. If things don't go right in one tank, you run the risk of infecting both tanks. :)
