Fresh water tank as a kid my older brother was talking back to mom she was feeding my lil brother. back then baby bottles were made of glass. She got mad and threw the bottle at my older brother missed and took the ten gallon tank out. save a few of the fish.

The other is my 125 gallon tank went to Tenn for a week my wife turned the A/C off to save money on the electric bill when we got back the tank was 93 degrees fish were dead. Now I own a chiller and still make sure the A/C stays on while on vacation. Like Pharmrjohn I still make sure to remond her of that every vacation.

that would suck thats how my 5.5 FW met it's end about 5 years ago it was a golf ball though and it just sprang a leak up graded to the 10 because it was cheaper (smaller tank more expensive go figure)

When my son was about 4 years old, we had a freshwater tank with an oscar in it. My son was very fascinated with it and decided one morning to make the little light in the heater come on. By the time I got home from work that evening, the oscar was boiled.

I got home one day and there was no power in the apartment, so i went to the fuse box and noticed a fuse switch was tripped. So i switched it back on... and the power went on and than out again.
I than noticed that the lights above my 4ft Oscar tank had fallen into the tank and electrocuted the water and when i switched the fuse on again it electrocuted it again... The Oscar in the tank was a bit twitchy, like he was getting little shocks for a few days. He is still alive three years later and doing well though. One Cichlid died either on the first shock or the second shock I gave it, otherwise I was very lucky.

Another friend of mine admitted to me just the other day, that the mysterious death of their partners 10 grand (!!) tank was due to them pouring bleach into it after they had a domestic. Nearly 8 years later, the ex still thinks it was due to a sea urchin they put in it that they had found at the beach.

I was setting up my quarantine tank a week ago or so right next to a container that I had some new rocks curing in and the light over the rocks fell right in the water. What does my dumb a$$ do? Of course, I reach right in and pull it out. Fortunately, I was quick enough that the water didn't get into it and short it out. I did get a shock when I used my other hand to switch it off. Needless to say, I bought another GFIC for these tanks. Reading these forums prior had prompted me to get one for the main set up but I guess the lesson went out the window with the two QTs at least until now when the shock (even though small, could have been worse) ingrained it permenantly into my memory bank.

When I was 7 or 8 my bestfriend had a 30 gallon FW with a lot of goldfish in it. I decided to feed them... Only problem was that the fish flakes were clumped and stuck in the jar. Quick tap of my finger and half of the entire jar's flakes fall straight into the tank.

Needless to say I got the hell out of there... The fish ended up dieing. I told her several years later and there was no bad feelings.

oh oh oh! This is my thread! I have a few.

-- When I was six and @ my grandma's, my sister (without thinking- she was 10) set my goldfish bowl on the stove. They boiled. I only found out that all of the goldfish dying at the same time was not old age 2 months ago.

-- The lighting in my 6gal mini reef caught flame. The water turned black. It all died.

-- My uncle's fuge was cracked by his dog. He was fed up with aquariums and gave his 25gal reef to me (he knew i had kept the 6gal and had some SW experience).

-- The sump to the 25gal smashed, flooding my room.

-- The 25 cracked at the seam in a magfloat-cleaning gone awry, flooding my room. My brother said we could never get an aquarium in the room again unless it was a octopus or cuttle tank. I was able to save the inhabitants in a large rubbermaid w/ the pc lighting.

-- I decided to upgrade to a 55. When it only had liverock and sand, the light fell in while my hand was in it. It hurt... a lot. And the live rock/sand was no good.

-- I finally got the 55 up and running and went to upgrade to MH lighting. The cooling fan broke. There was wood on the corner of the tank that caught fire (my little sister set it there) from the heat. The the hanging equipment somehow broke from the fire. The lighting fell on the aquarium and melted the center brace. I had to et a new tank.

-- I got a 29gal cuttle tank in my room. The heater (that came from my uncle's tank 4years before) well. . . exploded, killing my cuttles. There were glass shards all over the tank and the sand was black in the area of where the heater was. My room smelled like metalic, burning rubber for a week (ish).

Despite what my juju might say, I have not killed any children. . . or anyone actually. I can't really think of what I could have done diferently (with out future sense) that would have made those not happen. Life goes on. Don't be paranoid; it's just an aquarium- (or maybe your house/family if fire is involved.) Aquariums are sopposed to be fun and worrying isn't fun. Take all the pecations you know might be a problem and enjoy.
