Would 3/8" thick glass be safe for a Peacock Mantis?

  1. Yes, the glass is plenty thick and shouldn't break.

I'll keep that in mind when I'm shopping around for glass. I want to be lenient on the glass thickness, and yet cautious as well. I've seen and heard a fully grown mantis hit 1/4" acrylic, and it does not sound very pretty (well, it sounds beautiful in regards to the mantis. not to the acrylic though :) ) I feel that 1/4" might be a little too lenient, as far as glass thickness goes. When you say go bigger, do you mean a bigger tank? Or bigger glass thickness? I will definitely keep it in mind, though.

New poll, what about 1/4" glass? :D Mel, how thick is the biocube glass?

Also I want to build this myself instead of buying a tank because I want one custom built to my specs, and I would get super satisfaction from having a mantis in a tank and stand I built and plumbed myself.

In my opinion, if you are going to use 3/8" glass, you can go all the way to a 20 " height. If it were me, I would build a 36 x 24 x 20.........that gives you 24" of width for the mantis, TONS of room for him to roam. And 20" is plenty in height, plus it's still super safe.

What if I made it a full, true cube? 20x20x20? I might cut up some cardboard and tape it together to get an idea on visual tank size. Making it a full cube would give me exactly 8000 cubic inches, which converts to around 34 gallons. I'll definitely be tinkering with various sizes and such. Google SketchUp has been an enormous help (and a ton of fun) in helping me think things out.

    24 x 24 x 24 would be better.

I voted no, simply because no one else had, and to crush your dreams. I have no facts or info to back up my vote.

Yeah, but that's flippin huge...I think...yeah. Flippin huge. This will probably be in my (parents) house until I move out to an apartment next year some time. First year college freshman have to live on campus or at home, so I opted for at home because I'd rather save the $3000 for something usefull :D

Haha I got on 3reef this morning and wondered "who the heck voted no??"...and then I saw your post. ::) Typical.

    Well, you asked for it!
Article on it happening at a LFS:
    Daily Mirror: Mantis breaks tank!

And here is a link to a scientific study done by a team at UC Berkeley, which proves they can easily shatter a tank. This link also has a video of a peacock breaking the front pane of a 75 gallon tank:
USATODAY.com - Shrimp spring into shattering action

Does it happen a lot? No, not at all. But it's definitely not an untrue rumor either ;)

True :D I'm still toying with different sizes, so we'll see what happens. I really like a "cube" look...but not a true cube because they look too tall. I whipped up a 20x20x17 and it looked like a really good size. But maybe I could scale it up some...24x24x20? 24x20x20? I dunno I'm still playing around :D
    It was 1/4" glass...so I don't know if I'm impressed or not.

The video wouldn't work for me :( And they never say what thickness of glass. So I'm still a skeptic :D
