We decided to swing into our local petco and to my surprise there was a very small yellow tang that I wish I could have rescued. It was so skinny that you could see its ribs and all of its fins were missing big chunks. I already have a large yellow in my tank so I don't think it would work out. I do have a small quarintine and the fish is only about the size of a fifty cent piece, would the ten gallon work temperarily?

    Can't be any worse....

See if you can't talk them down on the price.

ya, they want $50 for it. Nuts if you ask me. I payed $45 for mine and he is a monster. Just feel bad for him though. My other half said that the one we have would definitly kill it. I have seen tangs together in tanks the same size as mine before would it be possible?

Usually if added at the Same time they should be ok. But it is risky to add after one is established. Especially with a size deferential as you noted.

I've seen some of the bad news lifestock at the local petco myself so I feel for you. The 10 gallon tank isn't ideal, but being dedicated to that single fish it might work briefly. I'd recommend spending 10 bucks at Wal-Mart and get one of those 30 gallon rubbermaid bins. Easier to maintain the water quality in something a little larger, and also may not make the tang feel as stressed. I'd see if you can talk them down in price and after you've nursed the guy back to health, take it to a real LFS and trade it in for some coral. Good for you and good for the tang :)

    Good luck!

I understand the desire to rescue this fish and I think the 10 gallon would definitely be better than where it is now.

My only caution is this, when we buy these fish, even though our intentions are good, that only that tells the lfs is that the fish will sell....and then they go get more to abuse. And the big chains only care about the profit.
