Ok so I was thinking about surprising my little brother with a 20 gallon tank with a couple of very small clown fish.

I have a 120 gallon tank that has been up for a year and is very stable. I was thinking of doing a water change and using my current tank water which is already cycled. Would this work? I was still planing on running it for a few weeks before I added the fish in. Would I still have to wait for the normal cycle time like if you are just starting out 4-6 weeks?????

I also want to add about 20 lbs of live rock already cured.

    Thoughts appreciated.

    thankssss

Unless you are using sand and rock from your system you would still have to cycle. The water doesnt really have anything that will help it along. Might as well start of with brand new water imo.

Well IMO I would fill it and let it cycle. But when I used cured LR my cycle was probably small. I never even noticed it. So if you let it run for a few weeks then you'd probably be ok.

Just be sure to test the water. I agree with skurious. Just cycle it like normal to be safe. But if you are using cured rock you might have just a small cycle IMO

1+ there will be no cycle if u transfer rocks and sand in water from ur tank but do it in a timely fashion ,also mix some fresh saltwater to take with u over there (5g or so ) to put in tank enough to cover rocks and sand add a air pump and heater. mix more salt when u get there u will be fine

great advice above. Using old water will not help, but using live sand and rocks will greatly speed up the cycle if not instantly cycle the new tank.
