Sure, lots of people do. I have, I probably wouldn't again, as if you don't like the color, it's a pain to scrape off. I prefer to paint a piece of plastic or posterboard etc.. and put that behind the tank. Then it's easier to change. Some people also use car window black tint. It works well, and may be a little easier to remove than paint, if you want black.

I have done it and it is safe as long as you paint the OUTSIDE of the glass.

I would paint it, I just painted my 5.5. but my 75 came with a big black sheet of acrylic siliconed on the inside =P but in my opinion painting looks better

paint is fine inside the tank too as long as you let it completely bry like 2 days I would say.

Certain paints seem to be ok underwater, not all. And even the ones that are, are only "ok" because people have done so without their tanks crashing. That dosn't mean that it hasn't caused issues that haven't been recognized. I would only paint the back outside.

Acrylic painted, and outside of the tank, is indistinguishable from the tank being painted if sealed properly so water can't get in between it and the tank.

I painted the back of my tank black and I love the way it looks.

Painting is fine. Like 2in10 said, make sure you paint the outside. You can paint the inside with some "reef" safe paints like Krylon Fusion but when it starts to flake you'll wish you hadn't.
I've painted the backs of a couple tanks on the outside and wish I hadn't. In the future I will use 5% window tint or static cling vinyl sheets.
