The funding is through the admission prices. A membership for a year is roughly $40 per person, which is an amazing deal because after two visits you have paid off your membership for the year. I forget the numbers but the cost to run the entire aquarium (small to medium aquarium as compared to places like the Georgia or Steinheart Aquarium) is something crazy like $30,000 a month for electricity. Could be even more, its a crazy number. Everything about that reef has huge numbers and even Joe (the curator) is still amazed by it. Everything is measured in gallons per minute. a 20% water change is 5,00 gallons. They use natural sea water for everything in the aquarium. On the tour you can see their 25,000g holding container, they get water locally and transport it with a large water truck and hold it till they need it. There is a 300 or 500 gallon carlson surge device that fills in 5 minutes and empties in less than 1. Also, unlike the Georgia Aquariums reef tank, this is 100% real coral. An impressive display to say the least, especially when you stand in front of it and think about how big your aquarium would be if it was sitting inside of it.
