Okay, I went on a 3 day trip this weekend (3 days, 2 nights) and was only away from home one day. my dad took care of top off and my melanurus wrasse didn't eat for one day while I was gone. The salinity is 1.025, nitrates >5, and no fish. He didn't jump and I can't find his body...could the CUC eat him in the short amount of time I was gone? I have a big diatom bloom, and some film algae. My torch coral looks happy and fine so my params are good. Also I checked under any loose rocks and he wasn't stuck or anything. Any idea how he died?

its possible that he isnt dead. wrasses like to burry themselves in the sand bed. try raking your hands gently through the sand bed and see if u cant find him.

how old is your tank? diatoms feed on silicates in the water, if you recently set up your tank or added new equipment then they silicates from the plastic leach in the water. when the silicates are depleted the diatoms will die off.

My tank has been cycled for 2 weeks now, I already had a diatom bloom and I haven't added any new equipment recently. I sifted through the sand again and there was no sign of him.

I'm a little confused that you took a 3 day trip but were only gone for one day, but that's beside the point. LOL

I would ask your dad what went on with the tank while you were gone. There's really no way any of us could hazard anything but a guess without a lot more information.

What did he top off with?
Why didn't eat it for one day?
Was food put in the tank & it just didn't eat?
How long has it been missing?
What are your ammonia and nitrite parameters (actual numbers)?
What else is in the tank?
How long did the tank cycle and how did you cycle it?
How long did you wait after the cycle before adding livestock?
Do you (or your dad) dose anything?
