Well I made a huge bonehead mistake today... Luckily I realized it and hopefully corrected it in time..

I brought home some fresh RODI water from the LFS this week and intenended to do a 10 Gal water change on my 50Gal tank before I fly off to Toronto for a week.. Well, I did the water change and FORGOT that I got FRESH water instead of my usual salt water... I was going to mix it myself this time and totally forgot that I had gotten fresh water...

So as I am filling the tank back up I can see like distortion in the water.. At first I thought there was a temp difference in the water causing the distortion... Checked my thermometer and the temp had droped a bit.. No worries... I through in a second 300W heater and continued filling.. Then it hit me!!! Holy Cow!! I put 10 Gal fresh water in it!!!!!!!!!! I grabbed my Spc. Grav. tester and sure enough it was way low.. 1.019.... I quickly grabbed some pitchers and got some of the water out of the tank and added salt mix to it and mixed it well until the salt was disolved and started bringing up the SG...

Hopefully I caught it in time and corrected it before it hurt the fish or coral.. I fly out first thing tomorrow morning so I will have to rely on my wife to keep an eye on things... The fish never seemed too phased and all the corals receeded at the time and have now started coming out again.. hopefully that is a good sign..

Hopefully some of you have made some bonehead mistakes and can share them so I dont feel so bad.. :-[

    Cheers,
    Jerid

Wow, that probably wasnt fun. I have done stuff like that too. I have found that unless its huge jump most of the fish and corals will be ok. one time mine droped from 1.024 to 1.020 and the shrimp were fine.
