Have you considered making a display refugium? Sounds like it's pretty similar to what you're up to. I guess it'd depend on available space and their proximity to each other.

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with, this is a pretty cool departure from the norm (which is always kinda cool).

Yeah, I guess you could call this a display refugium, only it won't be plumbed into other displays simply because of the way my house is setup, it would be plumbed into my "reef sump". Depending on how well the fish I'll have in there feed the algae, I'll be topping off with treated tap water for nitrates, feeding with frozen cubes and letting the phosphates into the tank instead of draining it, not running a skimmer, and any number of other crazy sounding things that typical reefs usually can't stomach.

I am just waiting to drill the holes for the sump and get my lights and substrate how I want it, then I should be off and running. On one side of the tank I'm going to have a lot of Caulerpa Prolifera growing in open sand dunes to resemble seagrass, but without the difficulty that often comes with saltwater vascular plants. Then when I see that is growing nicely I will start adding blue ball and some red grape next. Rock formations are going to be fairly minimalistic. Also, I'm going to use some of those aqua-mag magnetic rocks that someone recently showed me to get some of the macros growing in some different locations than the norm.

I'm excited. Hope it turns out well. I'm often too critical of my own designs. If I get to the point that the plants are consuming Nitrates and phosphates as fast as I'm putting them in I think I'll add a bed of Ricordeas along the edges of rock formations. Mushrooms always seem to grow like mad for me.

This is gonna be sick! I've seen macro tanks and they also look good. LOVE the sand dune idea with caulerpa prolifera. I've had awesome results with that macro, never had it go sexual, and fast growth rate. I love the way it looks, I run it in my DT. The mag rocks will be cool too! Can't wait for this build to start. Good luck man

The net top video on BRS is excellent. Our club had a clinic where we built our own screen tops. Even figured out a way to make a curved channel for a bow front. Leave a little notch for power head lines. Easy to lift out for daily maint.
