My nitrate level is < 0.2 ppm (somewhere between 0 and 0.2 using Salifert). My Xenia is growing like crazy. I made the mistake of putting it in two areas of my tank. Now I only want it in one and cannot kill it in the other spot. I pull it out and it keeps coming back.

When my nitrate was high I couldn't keep Xenia alive.

I had xenia flourishing in my tank to the point where I was getting a new stalk every few days. Now some of it is shrinking away and it has slowed waaaaay down on spreading and multiplying. The only thing different I did was add more coral, including leathers.

You mentioned your boyfriend has colt and finger leathers, is the xenia in question anywhere in between the 2 leathers? Does he run carbon at all? It might be the leathers are staging chemical warfare and the xenias are taking the hit the hardest.

I have a huge colt, a leather and a toadstool. Xenia still grows like crazy and I don't run carbon.

Well the finger leather is on the left side of the tank and the colt on the right and the xenia is in the center. Its still alive and looks ok..were probably just going to put it into my 14 gal I just started. He read the colt and finger leather can give off a poison for no reason is this true because he wanted to frag the colt and put it in my tank but I don't want it to kill everything :(

Almost all soft types of coral can have chemical warfare. Some just have a stronger punch than others. Leathers are one of those.

Unfortunately, not much is know about reactions between corals when it come to this. It is possible that the Xenia is overly sensitive to the Leathers, but it is just guess work for the most part.

I did however keep leathers and Xenia in the same tank, and quite close at that, for almost 8 months.
