Just wanted to know if the xenia colony in my tank will over run my tank? its growing rapidly! it has completely covered the largest piece of LR in my tank and expanding. It's not just the area its in its also growing very tall, every LFS iv'e been to that has xenia the colony is short but widespread like a carpet. Mine is widespread but the steam of each polyp is 6-8 inches long. Just to give you a clue on how quick its growing, just a month ago it was 4-6 inches long. is there a way to keep it at a reasonable size? is there something i'm doing that is making it grow so much faster than any other coral? I'd like to add some diversity to my 55G reef but the xenia is invading available areas. got a picture so you can see what i'm dealing with. any suuggestions appreciated!

    Tank is a 55G with 4 -54W T5 bulbs, 2- actinic 2- 10000k.

lmao you have no idea, in a nutshell if there growing that fast and thriving they will dominate the tank. I got lucky when i removed mine and nothign came back, serious if you dont like it now and want it out, get ahold of it now before its to late. or you could try making the whole back wall of the tank a xenia farm! they will grow on the back wall if you set the rock against it, it looks pretty cool

xenia , just like GSP , can become a nuisance and spread . and quite quickly as youve noticed. best way is to either cut it back , but have to make sure you get the whole stalk, not leavin any "roots" behind. or frag your rock if possible , and trade it with someone or back to your lfs where you might et some small store credit. this will be an ongoing battle .

You can prune it, but it will probably continue to spread. This is a common occurrance for new hobbyists, they just don't realize how fast it grows.
