    Hello everyone,

I recently added a yellow tail tamarin wrasse to my DT. Its a 90 gallon with a 2 inch sand bed. I know how touchy these types of wrasse's can be and I did my research before getting him from the LFS. After I floated him for 30 and then dripped him for an hour I added him to the tank and he went right for the rock work hunting for Pods. The first day and a half he would swim in and out of the rock work but since last night and most of today I haven't seen him at all. I know these are burrowing wrasses and I am hoping that he is just getting acquainted with his new home and tank mates, but I wanted to ask if anyone has had any experience with either the yellow tail or red tail's and their hiding habits. Here is a picture of him and I really hope he is just hiding as the girl friend picked him out and would have to have to tell her he didn't last more than a week. Thanks everyone!

I just wanted to comment that that is a really cool looking fish! I don't believe I've seen one of those before.

Thanks Oldfish, I have recently become a big fan of wrasse's and when I saw him at my LFS I couldn't pass him up. I'll see them on the divers den for LiveAquaria from time to time but I am not a fan of having them shipped as this species doesn't do well transporting so I felt it had a better chance of survival after I had seen it eat and watch him at the LFS.

And thank you PghSteeler, hopefully he'll read the post and if he doesn't i'll try to PM him as requested. Thanks for the replies from both of you.

Since my first post on the 24th I haven't seen the wrasse at all and I'm starting to get a little worried. Has anyone had any experience with the tamarin wrasse or yellowtail wrasse as I am starting to fear the worse and that he is a goner?

Yes, i just sent him a PM. I hope I did it right as it isn't showing any messages sent and I am fairly new to the forum.

Hiding up to 2, or even 3 weeks is not unheard of. However, that's not typically the norm for Anampses wrasses either. What other fish are in the tank? Hiding for 2 weeks could be indicative of another tankmate being a bully and scaring the fish back into the sand every time it's attempted to come out. And that whole process might be less than 2 minutes; it certainly would be easy as an aquarist to miss.

Also, is your tank fully covered?

Thanks for the response Evolved. My current tank load is as follows:

    1 - Christmas wrasse
    1 - carpenters wrasse
    2 - snowflake clowns
    1 - fire fish
    1- pajama cardinal
    1-bi color angel
1 - yellow headed sleeper goby

When he was out the first few days he didn't seem to be picked on by any of his other tank mates, and he did eat frozen mysis just like he did when i saw him at the lfs eat frozen as well. I am glad to hear that hiding up to 2 weeks isn't unheard of, but i would agree that not seeing him at all the past couple weeks has me worried. I've checked the tank at different times throughout the day and no luck. I do have a bunch of copepods on the rocks and glass as well as refugium that is crawling with them. I hope he shows up but wanted someone's input who has experience with the tamarins. I appreciate the advice and will play the waiting game unless you have any other ideas. Last thing i want to do is stress him out more and start searching the sand bed.
