I was wondering what people thought of, of having a yellow tang in a 55gal tank? At its mature size, approx. 8", will it be too big for the tank?

It can be done. In a perfect world it can't. Do you plan on getting a larger tank? Does your LFS welcome returns for credit, or, free? Keep in mind that it is a pretty mean fish and should be added to tank accordingly. Meaning, don't add it first then start adding fish that would be a little more timid. Size will also be a factor. I do have a small yellow tang in my 55 ,but, it's more of a worker and will be transfered from reef to FOWLR as needed.

A 55 would be too small for a yellow tang. They swim a LOT

Even a small tang needs room to be happy and healthy.

Keeping in too small a tank will cause stress causing it to be more prone to get parasites and diseases.

(It certainly will not be a happy fish)

I think we have a responsibility to maintain the best conditions we can for the species we choose to keep.

Don't mean to be a repeating record...but tangs, all tangs need plenty of swimming room/space.

If you want to keep, get it a larger "home."

    Be kind to "Bubbles" ;)

According to my ref. book, the min. should be 75gals. Doesnt mean you cant have one in a 55g, but as stated below, sooner or later you will have to either get it out or get a bigger tank.
