I'm sorry, but I'm not quite on board with hermits being the culprit. Sorry for your loss.

Yah not sold that they were either but I do think they may have played a part. More I think about it. Tang slept low practically on the sand bed. One may have clipped him a few times and infection could have set in. It's one theory. Might be easier to remove them from the equation than to confirm a theory.

Oh me either, but those grey guys mess up coral and kill snails like none other. My money is on the trigger stressing it to death.

Nobody can say for certain that it was the hermits, only that the potential threat is real. Given that the tang was healthy before he was found covered in hermits while he was still alive, one can only assume the possibility.

That said, if you plan to keep them in the DT, I'd suggest providing a small chunk of raw seafood (fish, clam, shrimp, etc) once or twice per week to help curb any opportunistic tendencies. Despite their size, all hermits have a huge appetite.

I too am not a fan of hermits. In fact I only have one in my 220. With that said I would remove the crabs and possibly look for a new home for the trigger. You can then get another tang with some less aggressive fish to go with it.

Upon my last tank upgrade i ditched all the crabs from the tank. Amazing snail growth and a lot more interesting critters survive when those crabs aren't decimating the populations...always had hermits for years, will never have them again.

Thanks again to everyone for the good info. I am going to hold off on finding a new home for the trigger for now. I would have noticed if he was the culprit. There would have been a pretty big chunk taken out of the tang. I have seen his carnage. Anycase I will start with the crabs for now. Will see how it goes. I have my sites on a Kole Yellow Eye Tang... but will hold off on any other changes for now.
