I know that everyone recommends a 90g+ tank but I have seen many many people successfully keep them in a 55g. Before I get written up by the tang police I am just wondering, not actually planning on trying it.

actually you can successfully keep a full grown yellow tang in a 75G tank.
I have also seen many people have yellow tangs in 55G tanks without any problems.
I think though, some people actually return the tang if it gets too big for the tank.
IMO a 55G ( the 4 foot long one) is good for a yellow tang, however when you plan your stocking you will have to consider the bio load from the yellow tang and stock accordingly.

my personal opinion is that a 55 is too small for an adult which is what they will all hopefully become. i say this out of my own guilt. i have a desjardini sailfin tang in a 135 and i think the tank is too small. he already looks crowded......and he is not even full grown.

like with a 55g, if the stocking was 1 yellow tang, 1 tailspot blenny, 2 oc. clowns, and a fairy wrasse. would that be a reasonable stocking?

I would take the fairy wrasse out of the equation..
According to Live aquaria some Fairy wrasses need at least a 75G to be ok.
edit: there are actually some wrasses that can be ok on a 50g.

I'd do a flasher in a 55 if I really wanted a wrasse, but as stated, that's really too small for fairys.

I wouldn't put one in a 55, it's really not deep enough (front to back) for a yellow. I could see a kole or similar birstletooth in a 55, but that is about it.
