So I got a zoa colony from the LFS who said it would be fine in my tank under 4 VHO T5s as long as it was near the top. We started it in the middle of the tank to acclimate it to the light and it closed up, shrunk and started growing algae so we moved it down a couple inches. That didn't help either, it shrunk even more and more of the polyps closed and it really wasn't happy. It was in that spot for about 2 weeks then we moved it back to the original spot 4-5days ago. It hasn't gotten any bigger, all but 2 polyps are closed now. I've been feeding Reef Roids 2-3x per week, as was suggested and have done 3 water changes since getting it about a month ago. We have other coral, frogspawn, mushrooms, ricordea, xenia all growing and multiplying no problems. What can I do to help out the zoa?? I know I should have a MH light but can't afford that at the moment. In the next couple months that is the plan but with all the research I did, it was widely reported that the VHO T5s should be sufficient. We have 35ish hermit crabs, a horseshoe crab, an emerald crab, a cleaner shrimp, turbo snails, a herralds angel, powder blue tang (who just joined the tank yesterday) and a pretty goby so I thought maybe the snails crawling over it were bothering it but they haven't touched it in a couple days - that I've seen anyways. Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Okay...first of all...you want to put it at the bottom of the tank....is it in any flow? if soo..how much...

And also..i would put it on the bottom in medium to low flow and leave it be...you are moving it WAY to much and thats probebly pissing it off even more..I have had probebly over 800 polps of zoas in my tank..and all grew very well and looked awsome...but when i bought this tubbs blue frag with about 12 polyps on it..it got covered in diatoms...and then i put it in the QT....came back...put it back in my tank...diatoms and died again...

I think its possible that some zoas just dont like some tanks period....I would do what i have suggested and just let it sit for while on the bottom of the tank and...if you have a QT put it in there...let it sit...maybe you could dip it if you want also, there could be pests on it.

And zoas dont need MH, i had mine under PC's, T5HO's and they did great. and all of your other corals are fine under your lighting.

It's under the return for the filter but it doesn't blow much at all. I wouldn't say its in high flow or anything. It was on the bottom for a while with very little flow and some polyps started opening but only a handful. Is there a supplement or anything I can put in to help it out? I'll move it back down again to the sand bed, but how long is long enough to start expecting it to open and look better? Theres no diatoms in the tank, it seemed to be getting covered in green algae but the crabs picked most of that off. Thanks for your help!

I would definately put them towards the bottom in moderate to medium flow, sounds like they are too close to the lighting possibly.Zoas don't require massive amounts of light and usually do well in lower light tanks. What are your water parameters?
